Brazilian Wax Aftercare: The 48-Hour & 2-Week Rules
Brazilian wax aftercare from a licensed esthetician — exact 48-hour do's and don'ts, ingrown-hair prevention, the 2-week routine, and what to skip.
The exact 48-hour & 2-week routine
The wax is the easy part — aftercare is what determines whether you get smooth skin or a field of ingrowns. Here's the routine our estheticians give every client, broken into the first 48 hours, the first week, and ongoing maintenance.
The First 48 Hours — The Critical Window
Your follicles are open. Anything that introduces bacteria, friction, or heat will inflame them. For 48 hours, hard-skip these:
❌ Avoid for 48 hours
- • Sex, masturbation, oral
- • Gym, Pilates, spin, yoga (anything sweaty)
- • Hot baths, saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs
- • Swimming (chlorine + open follicles = burning)
- • Tight leggings, jeans, shapewear, thongs
- • Self-tanner, scented lotion, perfume on the area
- • Sun and tanning beds
- • Exfoliating scrubs, retinoids, AHA on the area
✅ Safe immediately
- • Loose cotton underwear or going commando
- • Lukewarm shower (no body wash on the area day 1)
- • Pure aloe vera gel for redness
- • Fragrance-free moisturizer
- • Coconut oil (antibacterial + soothing)
- • Walking
Day 3 to Day 14 — Ingrown Hair Prevention
Ingrowns form 5–14 days post-wax, when the new hair starts pushing up and gets trapped under dead skin. This is when you exfoliate.
| Day | What to do |
|---|---|
| Day 3 | Start a BHA (salicylic acid 2%) — apply at night. PFB Vanish, Tend Skin, or Paula's Choice are all fine. |
| Day 4–7 | Gentle dry-brush or exfoliating mitt in the shower, 3x this week. |
| Day 8–14 | Continue BHA + mitt 3x weekly. Moisturize daily — dry skin traps hair. |
| Day 14+ | If you see a trapped hair, do NOT dig at it. Warm compress, then gently lift with a sterilized needle if it's visible at the surface. |
What's Normal vs. Not Normal
Normal: Redness 2–24 hours · small bumps day 1 · slight tenderness · a few stray hairs you missed (book a 5-min touch-up).
Call your esthetician: Raised welts past 48 hours · pus or yellow discharge · spreading rash · fever · any sign of infection. These usually mean a product reaction or folliculitis that needs topical treatment.
The Long Game
Aftercare is also between appointments. Two minutes a day keeps you smooth and ingrown-free:
- • Exfoliate 2–3x a week for the whole 4–5 weeks between waxes.
- • Moisturize daily. Dry skin = trapped hair = ingrowns.
- • Do NOT shave between waxes. Shaving resets the cycle — hair grows back coarse and the wax becomes painful again.
- • Re-book at 3–5 weeks. Hair needs to be 1/4 inch for the wax to grip cleanly.
