What to Tell Your Waxer: 8 Things Your Esthetician Needs to Know
By Magical Waxing Team • 7 min read • February 2026
Your esthetician is a trained professional who wants to give you the best possible experience. But they can only do that if they have the full picture. Here are the 8 essential things to share before your waxing appointment at any of our Atlanta locations.
1. Medications You're Taking
Several common medications affect how your skin responds to waxing:
Medications That Affect Waxing
- Accutane (isotretinoin): Must wait 6-12 months after stopping. Causes severe skin thinning.
- Retinoids (tretinoin, Retin-A): Stop 5-7 days before waxing
- Antibiotics: Some increase sun/wax sensitivity
- Blood thinners: Can increase bruising risk
- Steroids (topical): Thin the skin in applied areas
- Hormonal medications: May increase sensitivity
2. Skin Conditions & Allergies
Always mention conditions like eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, or active breakouts. Your esthetician may need to avoid certain areas or use a different wax type. At Magical Waxing, we offer specialty waxes for sensitive skin including hypoallergenic options.
3. Recent Skin Treatments
- Chemical peels — wait 2 weeks minimum
- Microdermabrasion — wait 1-2 weeks
- Laser treatments — wait 2 weeks
- Sunburn — wait until fully healed
- Dermaplaning — wait 1-2 weeks
4. If You're Pregnant
Waxing during pregnancy is safe, but hormonal changes increase sensitivity. Your esthetician can adjust their technique, use gentler wax, and work more carefully in sensitive areas. Many pregnant clients get their Brazilian wax throughout pregnancy.
5. Your Pain Tolerance
There's no shame in being nervous or having a low pain threshold! Your waxer can:
- Work in smaller sections
- Apply pressure after each strip to reduce sting
- Use breathing techniques with you
- Take breaks if needed
6. If It's Your First Time
First-time waxers deserve extra care and guidance. Tell your esthetician so they can explain the process step by step, check in with you frequently, and use the gentlest technique possible. Read our first-time Brazilian wax guide.
7. Past Bad Experiences
If you've had a bad waxing experience before—burns, excessive pain, skin lifting, or an allergic reaction—share the details. Your esthetician can take preventive measures and ensure it doesn't happen again.
8. Your Preferences
Don't be shy about asking for exactly what you want:
- How much hair to leave or remove
- Shape preferences (for bikini/Brazilian)
- Whether you prefer conversation or quiet
- Temperature preferences
