Can You Get a Brazilian Wax While Pregnant? (Trimester Guide)
OB-approved guide to Brazilian waxing during pregnancy — safety by trimester, pain differences, what to skip, and the pre-delivery wax timeline.
Safe in all 3 trimesters — here's the prep
Short answer: yes — Brazilian waxing is safe in every trimester of a low-risk pregnancy. The real conversation is about pain and positioning, both of which get harder as you get bigger. Here's the trimester-by-trimester reality.
Trimester-by-Trimester Reality Check
| Trimester | Pain | Position | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st (0–13 wk) | Normal | Lying flat | Closest to pre-pregnancy. Most comfortable trimester to wax. |
| 2nd (14–27 wk) | +20–40% | Lying flat OK until ~26 wk | Hair grows faster, denser. May need touch-ups at 3 weeks vs 4. |
| 3rd (28–40 wk) | +40–60% | Side-lying or wedge | You can't see anything. Esthetician does all positioning. Book by 38 wk. |
Why It Hurts More
- • Increased blood flow — your pelvic area has 50% more blood circulation by week 20. More blood = more sensitivity.
- • Estrogen + relaxin hormones make skin softer and nerve endings more reactive.
- • Hair density increases — pregnancy hormones extend the anagen (growth) phase, so more hairs are present at once.
What to Skip While Pregnant
- • Numbing creams (lidocaine, benzocaine) — not OB-approved during pregnancy.
- • Ibuprofen — pregnant women should use Tylenol instead. Confirm dose with your OB.
- • Hot wax baths or saunas after — anything that raises core temperature.
- • Self-tanner & retinoids on the area — already avoided post-wax, but extra-important now.
- • Sugar waxing if you have gestational diabetes — slight glucose absorption risk.
The Pre-Delivery Wax
If you want to be smooth for delivery, the sweet spot is week 36 to 38. Why:
- • Hair takes 4–5 weeks to grow back fully, so a wax at week 36 lasts through a 40-week delivery.
- • Past 38 weeks, positioning is genuinely uncomfortable.
- • Past 38 weeks, you may go into labor any day — rescheduling is stressful.
Many women skip the pre-delivery wax entirely — the L&D team has seen everything and they don't care. It's a personal-comfort choice, not a hygiene one.
When to Skip Waxing Entirely
Talk to your OB first if you have:
- • Placenta previa or any placental abnormality
- • History of preterm labor
- • Are on blood thinners (heparin, lovenox)
- • Severe varicose veins in the bikini area
- • Active herpes or any skin infection in the area
